Money sorted.
Feet up.

All your finances in one place, sorted and stress-free. We host the open-source Actual Budget so you don't have to.

The Basics

No catch, no clever stuff. Here's what you're getting.

It's free and always will be

This is a passion project from someone who has been helped by the NZ personal finance community, and wants to give something back.

Your own private budget

Created the moment you sign in with your email. It's yours alone and you can export it and walk away any time. No lock-in.

Bank sync, when you want it

Import a statement by hand (it's easy), or connect to your NZ bank so it imports automatically. Totally optional.

The budget

This is where it all comes together. Every dollar you actually have gets a job - bills, groceries, savings - so you're planning with real money, not a guess at next month's pay. When life shifts, you just move money between categories and carry on.

Your transactions

Adding and sorting transactions is quick, whether you typed them in or imported a statement. Categorise as you go, split the weekly shop across a few categories, and fix a mistake in seconds. Changed your mind? Undo and redo mean there is nothing you can break by having a poke around.

The reports

See the shape of your money over time. Net worth, cash flow and spending by category come ready to go, and you can build your own dashboards from there. It is the long view - handy for spotting a trend or a slow leak without wading through a spreadsheet.

Features

Envelope budgeting

Give every dollar a job - rent, kai, petrol, savings - so the money that's left is genuinely spare.

Reports you'll actually read

Net worth, cash flow, and where it all went, drawn as clear charts. A glance, not a spreadsheet.

Bills that don't ambush you

Set your rent, power and subscriptions to repeat, and keep the big ones in view before they land.

On all your screens

Your budget stays in sync across phone, tablet and laptop, so it's there at the checkout or on the couch.

Bring your history along

Moving from a spreadsheet, YNAB, or a bank CSV export? Import it - no retyping from scratch.

Tidies itself up

Set a rule once and matching transactions sort themselves. Less admin, more feet-up.

Why it's free

Budgeting is critical when money is tight - but most apps charge a monthly subscription that's out of reach for the people who need it most. Trackie is free so that cost is never the reason someone can't get on top of their money.

Trackie is hosted by Alan Grainger. I've received so much value from the NZ personal finance community over the years, and this is a way for me to give back. I will never monetise this - it will always be free for anyone in New Zealand who needs it.

Sure, but won't you monetise it or enshittify it at some point?

Great question. I've been running Share Note for Obsidian since 2022. It gets more than 2 million hits a month and serves ~120GB of data from my own hosting, and it's still free. No ads, no monetisation, no crap.

Why “Trackie”, and not “Actual Budget”?

Actual Budget creates the open-source software we are using, but we don't want to make it seem like we are an officially endorsed project. Under the hood everything is still Actual Budget.
